Mastering Confidence & Building Challenging Relationships

 
 

When I was just 26 years old, I was appointed the head of recruiting and sales for a big program in a Fortune 100 financial planning company.

To achieve my sales and recruiting goals I needed the help of six male Managing Directors, some of whom were double my age, and many of whom had rightfully large egos from the success they created for themselves.

Needless to say, it wasn’t easy getting them to follow my lead right away.

→They had their own agendas.

→ They had other priorities.

→ And they “definitely didn’t want a little whippersnapper telling them what to do.”

Yeah, I went through a lot of Kleenex boxes in those early years.

And on more than one occasion I was ready to tell them where to stick it.

But I didn’t.

Because I loved my job, and I was committed to building the skills necessary to be great it.

I’m walking you through this because just last week Renee Biery asked me what makes me an expert in building and managing relationships with difficult contractors…

…and my entire career at that finance firm flashed before my eyes.

Eventually I did earn a ton of respect from those guys… but to get there, it took patience, confidence, a lot of tears, and a so many lessons learned.
