How To Handle Late Paying Clients

My first memory of creating a payment boundary was when I was just 13 years old.

I landed my first babysitting gig and it involved watching our new neighbor’s kids for a week, for a few hours a day.

There were four of them btw: two sets of twins, all under the age of six..

Well I went over to their home each day and watched them, played with them, you name it.

On one occasion they asked me if we could go get ice cream. Not knowing what to say but having empty pockets in the moment, I ran home and grabbed $20 of my own birthday money, and off we trotted to Baskin Robbins.

When the end of the week came and it was time to collect my earnings, I went home empty-handed 😳

It was confusing, that’s for sure. But I questioned, “Maybe this is just how it goes?” “Maybe she’ll pay me later?” “Maybe I didn’t do a good enough job to be paid?”

Well I’m happy to report that none of that is true.

My mom immediately rang up the mom next door and demanded I not only get paid, but that I get reimbursed for the ice cream I bought her children.

Minutes later the woman came trotting over, payment in hand, and I was at the door ready to collect.

My mom’s next words will stay with me forever:

“You’re not babysitting for them again.”

That day taught me three valuable lessons:

  1. People are supposed to pay you.

  2. They’re supposed to pay you on time.

  3. If they don’t, you’re not working for them again.

I may have been 13, but those are payment beliefs I still live by today.

And they are shared by those who get paid on time in their design businesses too.
