3 Reasons Why You Aren’t Making More Money In Your Design Business

If you follow me on the ‘gram you may have picked up on that I cook kind of a lot.

Yes, it's time consuming, but I love to do it because it's so much cheaper and healthier than ordering out.

And almost always, whatever I make turns out really good...

But not always 😬

In fact just a couple months ago, I made what could be crowned my worst meal ever 👑🫠

It all started when my neighbor Tarah gifted us fresh squid ink pasta she got from Eataly. It felt like SUCH a treat because I never would have bought it myself! And although I never cooked with squid ink pasta before, I was excited about trying something new and hopefully making a bomb meal with it.

She didn't provide any recipes (maybe I should have asked? ugh, hindsight..) but I found a decent one online that I had a good amount of the ingredients for, and the right swaps for anything I didn't have on hand.

Well, {{ subscriber.first_name }}, I spent a LOT of time that night cooking up what I thought was going to be a masterpiece.

It wasn't.

It was actually really nasty and probably the only meal I’ve ever made that Jacob didn’t take a second bite of (I’m not kidding).

And I present to you, the highlights:

  • The sauce was so gross. It called for white wine, which we didn’t have on hand (I thought we did!) but Google told me that Apple Cider Vinegar would be the best swap. Didn’t work. It was so runny, so acidic, and totally disgusting.

  • The shrimp was WAY overcooked. I actually used pre-cooked shrimp and meant to just heat it up in the pan, but I definitely left it in the pan for too long, and it was nasty AF.

  • The pasta…. Listen, there weren’t any instructions on the packaging of how to cook it so I followed Google’s general recommendation. It didn’t work. I think I undercooked it, but I also cooked it for like, double the amount of time I saw on Google? Idk. It was an epic fail.

All that time spent, and all those expensive ingredients, but the dish was an epic fail 😳

But here’s the thing, friend:

It’s not about the hours spent or how expensive all the ingredients were.

What mattered was how the ingredients were used.

I hear the same thing every time I talk to a new designer:

“I'm SO busy! I’m working constantly! I should be making so much more money than I am right now!”

But the hard truth is this 👇

The designers making the most money aren't necessarily the ones who are clocking the most hours.

It's about how those hours are being used.

Today I went all-in on why you’re not making more money in your business, DESPITE how many hours you’re logging.

I share 3 reasons why you're not earning more, and what you should be doing instead if you are making those mistakes.

Because making more money isn’t about clocking the most hours…

...it’s about having strategy, being focused, and being intentional with your actions.

Have a pen and paper ready for today, I think you’ll like it!
