What To Do When a Client Doesn’t Like Their Result
Much like traditional adolescents, I spent a large majority of my teenage years putting way too much importance on other people’s opinions of me.
In fact, when I found out that someone didn’t like me, I would take it as a personal attack.
Until one day I read a quote that totally changed my life:
“You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be someone who just doesn’t like peaches.”
Whoa.
Call me impressionable, but this quote liberated me because it finally gave me a way to disconnect from what I cannot control: like other people’s thoughts and preferences.
Now, when a client hires you to design their home and then doesn't like the end result...
well, that’s a little more complicated.
Well, that’s a little more complicated… because THAT you’re semi-responsible for solving.
In this week’s video, I take a deep dive into this incredibly challenging, mentally exhausting client dilemma: How to resolve a client not liking their result.
Sometimes you did everything perfectly, and they just don't like it.
And other times, at some part of the process, there was an oversight that created a different result than they had anticipated.
Either way, it is on you to provide possible solutions.
In this video, I share:
The most crucial part of solving any design issue (ehhem… managing your own emotions!)
Actual language you can use when talking to your client to keep things professional but friendly
When it’s appropriate to offer a discount—and when it’s NOT (spoiler: don’t panic offer one!)
Whether it is a taste mismatch or small misstep, I promise you that it won’t be the end of your career. It’s just all a part of the journey.
But the better you get at solutioning it, the less you’ll be afraid of it happening again.
